Texas Rangers Tickets And A Day At Rangers Ballpark In Arlington
Founded in Washington, D.C., the Texas Rangers were originally known as the Washington Senators. Historical recollections clearly point out that these Washington Senators were not the ones who relocated to Minnesota after 1960. From 1961 to 1971, these Washington Senators played in D.C. then relocated to Arlington, Texas in 1972 and changed their name to the Texas Rangers. They have been members of the American League since 1961 and the West Division since 1972. Their colors are blue, red and white.
As the Washington Senators, the team seemed headed down a path towards doom and gloom from the very beginning almost, losing around 90 of the games played each season. On a positive note during this period, Frank Howard won two home run titles but it was not enough to bring the team up to winning standards overall. When money troubles beset the Washington Senators and owner Bob Short threatened to move the team, Mayor Tom Vandergriff came to the rescue and purchased the team, which was then moved to Texas and renamed.
The closure to the era of being the Washington Senators ended terribly at the last game when more than 10,000 fans walked in without paying because security guards walked away. Without security present, the umpire chose to forfeit the game to the New York Yankees. With the move to Texas, the Texas Rangers made Turnpike Stadium their home and right away seating capacity was increased during off season and the stadium got a new name as well. Just two years later, the Texas Rangers came in second behind the Oakland Athletics with a season 84-76.
The change of name and scenery was very good for the Texas Rangers. Although a pattern seemed to emerge where the Rangers would have a year of almost being successful to several seasons of mediocrity and poorly played games. Some say that a part of this destructive cycle was due to unpopular trades like Jim Sundberg for Ned Yost. Another factor that had a negative effect on the Rangers performance was the team’s inability to play in the extreme heat. It created a precedent of night games that still exists today.
Currently, only three numbers have been retired by the Texas Rangers. Manager Johnny Oates’ number 26, Nolan Ryan’s number 34 and Jackie Robinson’s number 42, which was retired by the Major League Baseball association. The Texas Rangers Hall of Fame includes Oates, Ryan, Jim Sundberg, Buddy Bell, Ferguson Jenkins, Vandergriff (for his role in bringing the Texas Rangers to Texas), Mark Holtz, John Wetteland, Rusty Greer, Toby Harrah and Ruben Sierra.
The Rangers have won three West Division titles in 1996, 1998 and 1999 but have yet to make it to the World Series.
Arlington Stadium was the first location where the Rangers played home games from 1972 to 1993. In 1994, the team moved to The Ballpark in Arlington, which was renamed to Ameriquest Field in Arlington in 2004. Another name change in 2006 to Rangers Ballpark in Arlington rounds out the name differences. Located at 1000 Ballpark Way in Arlington, Texas, the venue has a grass playing surface and seating capacity of 49,200.
Although Rangers Ballpark in Arlington lacks a retractable roof, the Rangers have still managed to hit significant numbers of home runs in the blazing heat of the summer months. There are many fantastic seating choices at this ballpark for those who enjoy lower suite level and upper suite level options. Suites are named after players from Jackie Robinson to Lou Gehrig and all players in between. With many other ballpark features and amenities, the location is perfect for enjoying the Rangers in action beneath the Texas evening stars.
