Once you sign a contract with a major label are you automatically well-known and on your way to fame?
My band formed in January of 2010. We have already written 8 songs, 4 of which are on demo tape. We have only played live twice, once at a wedding and once at a private party, but Elektra records wants to sign a 2-CD contract. Is this a good thing? Are we gonna be a famous band now
I have been in a signed band and my best friend was in a very famous band in Australia. My brother was in a signed Metalcore band in the UK and i know various members of ‘famous’ bands in Australia currently.
Let me tell you one thing – NONE OF THEM EARNED A CENT!!!!!!
Do you know how record companies work? They are the scourge of the earth and survive on band’s blood sweat and tears….
1. Internet piracy is becoming such a problem for record companies….. They are ramping their deals up to take more of your money….. These are called 360 deals and include money from shows and merchandise.
2. You have to tour, tour, tour, tour. You will tire of it and it will put pressure on your band, possibly leading to a break-up.
I am jaded but honestly, I have learned to play music for music’s sake. My current band self-produced and released a free EP just to show that you can pave the way for yourselves. If you are willing to part ways with money to record and market, you can be just as successful, if you are willing to put in the hard yards…….
Forget fame and fortune….. Fame is not what music is about (It shouldn’t be anyway but sadly in the ‘Fallout Boy’ era, it seems to be).
MY ADVICE – If Elektra want you, make them want you really bad…… You are obviously a tight unit if they want you now, but don’t make the same mistake Greenday made in their early career – signing on emotion “quick, quick fame & fortune”. Their first release sold 30,000 units – GOLD. they earned $0…….. You will be trading artistic control and financial compensation for ‘fame’.
Play shows, hone your art and wait for one of the Major labels (not offshoots), coz thats the only way you’ll have a career. As Dave Grohl says – Indie labels are scrambling to stay afloat and hand out horrible deals to recoup quicker. At least Majors can speculate to accumulate……….
Remember this – as soon as you sign a deal you are automatically in debt…….. Be smart and if you do take the offer hire a music lawyer to suss the contract….
